postheadericon PFC CELEBRATES 50

On 4th January, 2010 Point Fortin East Secondary celebrated fifty years as an institution.  It was on February 04, 1960 that Point Fortin College as the school was originally  named, first opened its doors with an enrolment of seventy-five students in two classrooms. The first Principal was Mr Ralph Guevara and his staff consisted of one teacher, Mr Thomas Sampson.

In 1973, the first batch of Point Fortin Junior Secondary students was accommodated and the school was renamed Point Fortin Senior Secondary School.  A further name change occurred in 2009 and Point  Fortin East Secondary as the school is now named, one year later, has reached the ripe old age of fifty.  It is only fitting then that this milestone be celebrated in a grand way.

The formal launch of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations was held on Thursday 28th January, 2010 with an Ecumenical Ceremony.  This was well attended by past students and teachers from the 1960’s to the present.  The keynote and feature speakers for this event, were Father Martin Sirju (a past student) and the Honourable Minister in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education, Mr Fitzgerald Jeffrey (a past teacher at the school) respectively.

Many other activities are being planned to further celebrate this great achievement of attaining fifty years as a school.  These events with their proposed dates are as follows:-

LAUNCH                                       -               28th January, 2010

March through Point Fortin         -               11th March, 2010

Mr and Ms PFC                             -               28th March, 2010

Jubilation Time Concert               -              10th April, 2010

The Reunion – Cookout Fest         -               24th April 2010

Awards Function and Dinner         -             23rd September, 2010

Closing Event                                  -              8th October, 2010

There is also a 50th ANNIVERSARY MAGAZINE  being planned.  In addition, we propose to have on sale various items as keepsakes.  These may include:  T-shirts, buttons, mugs, glasses, bookmarks and badges.

It is our hope that former students, teachers and well wishes of our school, will join with us in celebrating this wonderful event.

I have not kept up with my old classmates as I have been living in the US for 25 years. PFC Days were the best ,i became a man at PFC. The friends i made at PFC are the same friends that i have today. Aggrey,Cox ,Marlon,Frank ,Garvin,Hayden. That is where Friends Creative Theatre began, that is where Abdon Mason became the politician that he is today. In those days you either played sports or studied your school work. I must credit Mr Mello Marshall for assisting me with Maths-yes maths. Mello was the PE teacher yet when i found difficulty with trigonometry i turned to him. I salute the teachers i benifitted from. Congratulations to all the staff and students of the Point Fortin College (PFC) on their 50th anniversary celebration.I also attended this great institution and graduated in 1981 with lots of great memories up to today.Just a little bit of history our basket ball team were the national round robin championions of T & T in 1981 under coach Ian Lamoth and Manager Mellow Marshall our teacher.I will definitely be present to celebrate such an occasion

  • Wendy:

Congratulations to PFC on their 50th anniversary. I did my five wonderful years –1973-1978, 1S thru 5S, Armstrong (was not strong…LOL!)… with the help of some great teachers, administrative staff members, classmates and fellow students.

A big thank you to those who contributed in molding me into the person I am today. There are some, however, to whom I want to say a special thank you. They include:

    · Beryl Walker – Principle of Accounts, who will invite me to her home on a weekend and tutored me in my school work

    · Roslyn Ramjattan – Food and Nutrition. I once asked her why every recipe calls for salt and she turn around and gave me the question as a home assignment……unforgettable

    · Patricia Small-Mc Cree – Netball Coach, who unofficially doubled as my English Composition teacher. She once had me rewrite my english essay to her satisfaction while the rest of the netball team waited to go play a netball match. Her reason, “even netballers must know how to write a good essay.” WOW!

    · Ethlyn Bridgeman – School Secretary, was truly like a big sister, always looking out for me.

    · Gregory Burne who introduced steelpan in school……unforgettable

  • PAST STUDENT:

I attended PFC from 1961 to 1967 under the stewardship of Princy. I remember all the sweaty boys going to the bathroom lunchtime to bathe. Princy would supervise them. I also remember the first Sixth form in 1965 when the girls in sixth form were allowed to wear white shirts while the other girls wore blue. I could never understand how so many boys could fit in Princy Volkswagen. I also remember the walks to Techier Road and the best gauva patch in the world. Rosey peters, Victoria and Jacob Alexander, Molly and Jenny St. Hillaire, Angela Andrews, Dennis Hunte, the Calpu sisters and their cousin Radica Kalpoo, the bike riders from Mahaica. Those were good days. Hope to see some of you in April

  • Monica:

Congrats to PFC.. I know the name has since changed but it would always be PFC for me … I attended from 72 – 77 and it was a great time … great educators – the likes of Ms Lee Young, Mr Mohammed, Mr Nimchan, Mr Dindial, Mr Bacchus and his penalty of oatfield toffies …. the great Ms Votor, now Ms Clifford, Mr Baisden, the ole Sarge and many more fantastic teachers who impacted and moulded the people we have become. Thank You!
… to my class mates, the 5R class of 77 … remember the mango tree next to the class! and what about Mr Kissoon and Evangeline from the cafeteria and Baba doubles with the little chit in it to get free doubles … great times …..oh so many fond memories of PFC and now one of our very own is the Principal!
Guys we gotta try and make the cook-out, it would be great to link up after so long … hope to see ya there, if you can’t come, send your donation, its to a good cause!

  • Miss Junior PFC 2002:

Happy 50th anniversary PFC. I went there from 1987-1989. Mr Singh was the principal at that time. I remembered when the rain fell the school would flood out. Sure that problem is rectified by now. Have not been to Point in years would try to attend one of the events.

  • L. Steele:

Congrats to my alma mater, on its 50 years anniversary, to all the past and present teachers and students, i convey my heartiest well wishes for the school and continued developement of the success for those who have passed and passing through. Hopefully I will be able to make it, but if not I would have my other sibling who attended get some memorobilia for me. Bless to all.

  • Lisa Steele-Pujadas:

I was there in the days when PFSSS was still called PFC and we wore skirts with inverted pleats and a “tielet” (that tiny thing on our necks could never be described as a tie). I was fortunate to have been touched by genuine teachers like Ms. Boochoon, Mrs. Naranjit, Ms. Castle, all responsible in some way for me finding the Me I am today. Mr. Nichols was a surprising supporter of mine, forever changing my view of what a principal is supposed to be. Messrs. Marshall and St. Hilaire encouraged gangly, physically and vocally uncoordinated youth to sporting and musical victories. Man, those were teachers! Passionate people who became more than Sir and Miss; Mr. Francis, Mrs. Mc Intosh, Mrs. Smith. Look, let me leave now before this nostalgia gets the better of me and I end up penning a thesis here. Family commitment on April 24th, but, I’m hoping to hear, read and see all that happened. The wonders of technology, simply marvelous.

    To Past Student,
What do you mean by “Point Fortin College was not the Ivy League of colleges in Point Fortin…?” Perhaps your sentence is in error otherwise you do not make sense. PFC may not have been Ivy League to you, but it was for many of us who were nurtured and gain a quality education there. Let’s not damn the bridge we crossed!

  • June:

Is it still possible to purchase the T-shirts, buttons, mugs, glasses, bookmarks and badges?
If so where and what is the price?

    Thank you.

  • S Ganase:

I will be in Tdad to celebrate the 50 anniversary on the 24/04/10 with the likes of Mr Rooplal Gobin who is now the principal. I am hoping to meet up with some of the old boys.I must say that it will be a little more like old men. Since I left Tdad in 1972 and I have lived in London. I did an SRN & then went to Southbank Uni and did Mechanical Engineering. I am married with three wonderful daughters. My BEST WISHES to one and all who attended PFC (PFSSS). I am looking forward to meeting up you all.

  • g. f. Jaffier:

Yes I graduated from PFC bin 78 and i remember Bacchus, Burns et all. I’ve lived in the US for the last 27 years and as you can imagine this stuff really is nostalgic for me and takes me back to what was a very happy time….of course you don’t know it until you get older. I was just home for carnival so i don’t think I’ll be able to make the celebrations but definitely will be with everyone in spirit. That school was great to me.

  • Arlena Ruben:

I attended PFC it was a good school,it was one of those schools as a student you had to work hard to achieve. Many of the students who graduated from my batch are doing well.I remember Mr Bacchus,Mr Francis,Mr Jeffrey.Congratulations to all.I prefer PFC than this new name.If I’m around I will join in the celebrations.I think I have benfitted from attending this school.

  • Past Student:

Point Fortin College was not the Ivy League of colleges in Point Fortin, people get it together, it was an instituition just like others where children were given an opportunity to be educated. Okay let’s try to see is we can incoporate a Hall of fame as part of the fifty year celebration where past students can send it their information such as year attended and what they are doing now, this is a great way to start a Scolarship Campaign contributing to children of Point Fortin. In this way we can give back to the community that nurtured us.

  • Former point Fortinian:

Mr. Web master, You are indeed correct, PFSSS, accomodated the first batch of Junior Secondary student in 1973, housing them until the completion of the Junoir Secondary School. With Intake from the Junior secondary school in 1977, and I wonder why is “junior sec” In quotation just wondering as a very sucessful past “junior sec” student.

  • Valerie:

The person who wrote the article needs to verify the dates for the name change from PFC to PFSSS. As of 1975 it was still PFC. The first batch of kids from “junior sec” emerged into the system around 1977. As an alumni who attended from 1975-1980 ( the class of Zessman(Roy M), Puppy (Fitzroy H) and Dr. Sylvan Pierre) we all can verify this…..

  • Iva Ashford-Alexander:

thats very great it would be a great pleasure to see old friends, sorry i would not be there. Brooklyn

  • annemarie mcalpin:

You would have to be living in Trinidad to enjoy the festivities, not taken into consideration is the fact that a lot of us have migrated and would have like to enjoy the festivities which would have been better if the events were planned closer together.

Big up to Gregory Burns one of the best history teachers in PFC.

  • j perelion:
