Evadney Thomas and her Mom Cathrine
EULOGY
Reflection on the life of Catherine Fullerton – Thomas, also called “Fullies”.
Catherine was born in Grenada on the 26th day of March 1920, in the parish of St. Patrick and was the third of eleven children born to hard working parents, Littleman “nan” and Catherine “mother” James. Together they did a wonderful job raising their family until “nan” was called home to the Lord, leaving “mother” with eleven young children to raise singlehandedly.
“Fullies” left Grenada in 1945 to come to Trinidad. She married Austin Fullerton in 1947 and was widowed a few years after. Years later she married Evans Thomas and was again widowed.
Owing to the lesson learnt about hard-work, she followed her parents’ example. She carried on her mother’s legacy of entrepreneurship- “Mother” owned and operated the only bakery and variety shop in her home village of Chantimelle, Grenada. Fullies was one of the early businesswomen in this country: She operated a cloth and clothes store as well as a sewing establishment on Wickham Street. The entire south western peninsula (from Mon Desir to Icacos) depended on her for clothes and other haberdashery to their doors steps. She ensured the continuation of this business legacy by ably assisting her son in arriving at the tasty cuisines available at ‘D’ Eatery. This degree of independence set her apart as one of the female business pioneers of that era. The school children in Gonzales looked forward to her delicacies including doubles and pholourie.
She managed one of the oldest Sou-Sou business in the area. She can rest with the pleasure of encouraging thrift among her peers ‘down to the very end’. She was an expert in the business of Sou-Sou, versed in the skill of “turn u hand” and satisfying a plethora of members’ needs on a daily basis.
Her life was not only about successful business enterprises: She endeared herself to the sport of kings as her favourite form of relaxation. At one time, race days at Union Park, Arima and Queen’s Park Savannah were big days in her life.
She loved people and was a very generous and compassionate person. She was the mother of three (3) children; Evadney, Curt & Andre (deceased). Her motto to them was, “father may have, mother may have, blessed is the child who has his or her own”.
She had a deep relationship with God and her favourite saying was, “trust and obey, there is no other way”.
The 23rd psalm was her favourite.
Thank you “Fullies” for planting the trees so that we can enjoy the fruit.

Pasky & Mom with little Andrea
