A Point Alive Feature
Well the election bell has been officially rung and Trinidad & Tobago is now on the home stretch towards what maybe described as the most interesting or entertaining elections of recent times.
With three major parties contesting, the voting public seems bewildered as to where to throw their support. While traditionally, voting has been along the lines of ethnicity and this may still be this way, however one political party seemingly appears to be bridging the divide which now exists politically. The Congress Of the People (COP) headed by Winston Dookeran is making the claim to be the “true” national party, and the COP must be given some credit for establishing themselves in the position which they now hold.
Beginning as a breakaway fraction of the United National Congress (UNC), the COP is now positioned where the UNC seems to be begging for unification and reconciliation. Winston Dookeran has repeatedly dismissed any thought of uniting with the Basdeo Panday led UNC. However, he maintains that the door is always open for dialog with any political party including his main rivals the PNM and UNC.
Within the last three weeks, reports have been circulating that UNC financiers have been calling for the removal of Mr. Panday as leader of the party. Some of the party’s supporters are of the view that Mr. Panday has a strangle hold on the party and is leading it towards its death. What has been made quite clear recently is, the UNC is on a desperate drive to make up with the COP.
Last weekend former Attorney General, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj appeared on a one man crusade pleading for unity between the separated parties. Ironically, Mr. Maharaj’s return to the UNC was one of the elements which caused the separation of members eventually forming the COP. Another element being the refusal of Mr. Panday to hand over the Leader of The Opposition role to Dookeran who was nominated unopposed and supported by Panday for the post of Political Leader of the UNC.
It now appears that any accommodation between the UNC and COP will have some prerequisites: The removal of Basdeo panday and doing things COP way. The truth is, the old Bas is not trusted by most and the COP would like to have him totally removed from the arena before any accommodation talks begin. A COP member told me that its not just Panday who is not trusted, but his loyalists like current opposition leader Kamla Pesad-Bissessar and others who always provide blind support for the master politician will not have any significant function if the COP accommodates the UNC in any Alliance.
Street talk predicts that FIFA Vice President Jack Warner or Lawrence Duprey,s CL Financial will pay off Bas to get out the way so as to clear the road for progress. These measures may become necessary since the UNC now appears to be the weakest horse in the election race.
The UNC has joined forces with other groups to form an alliance of sorts but which is generally considered as an alliance of jokes since the joining groups has no political experience and their leaders have serious credibility issues with John Public. Stephen Cadiz of the group YESTT and Lennox Smith, the leader of a Lavantille movement are branded self seekers. Cadiz, a Port of Spain businessman led a “Death March” to bring about awareness of the current crime situation. He indicated at that time his intention was to pressure to government to take positive action. At the time, citizens questioned Cadiz’s motive and believed that his intent was political. However, cadiz strongly denied that he was ever going to be political. Smith on the other hand is the leader of a registered political party which seems to have no followers. Smith has an ongoing feud with the government over the allocation of government contracts. He comes across as a rabble-rouser and someone desirous of acquiring personal gains.
Now, the real drama of election 2007 is nothing short of total bacchanal and it is coming from the PNM’s camp. Whether the political leader has lost his mind or knows something which most of the population doesn’t, he is surely creating some disgruntled PNMites on the home stretch of the election.
One would think that a longstanding party like the PNM would have had their house in order and being the incumbent government would have made things a lot more comfortable. Now, on the eleventh hour, the entire party and onlookers alike are bewildered by developments now taking place. While the intention of the Prime Minister may be proper, the timing and manner in my opinion is severely flawed and that shows signs of strategic planning and incompetent leadership.
Not only must a leader take into consideration his observations but he must consider the views of the people and when I say people I refer to the wider community and not a selected few who may have hidden agendas. The general population would view Fitzgerald Hinds as a well mannered, articulate and defender of PNM. Eddie Hart is regarded as a community activist in his area. Generally, these two gentlemen have the respect and admiration of the national community. There is now an apparent move to replace these members of parliament for some reason or the other. My question is why? Manning recently, has been heard repeatedly saying that this election will feature the next generation of the party. Is this an indication that he prefers more youthful representation at this time? By any stretch of the imagination, Hinds cannot be considered as being old.
In Point Fortin, Larry Achong like in the previous cases has been given the nod by the constituency, however, rejected by the screening committee chaired by the Political leader himself Patrick Manning. The Point Fortin scenario made firm my belief on one thing; not to fall for what you see on television. A general walk though the Point Fortin area asking questions about their representation would reveal that Achong is not the type of representative that the general population would want. Some even stated that he is a disgrace to the community. However, there are still those who believe that he is their best representative ever as evident on television.
At the last screening to select a candidate for Point Fortin, it was reported that bacchanal broke out when Hardware owner Anjanie Beharry showed to be screened. Pointalive was informed that Beharry almost fainted when she was verbally attacked by constituency activists. Talk around is that the Prime Minister indicated that he wished to have an Indo Female representing the constituency. This has not settled well with the party groups since Beharry is not known to be a PNM and she is not viewed as a people person.
It is now rumored that a cousin of former PNM minister of foreign affairs Ralph Maraj is now favored by Manning to be the likely candidate. There is also utter disgust with Grantly Wells, a former councilor who seems to be the person working against the constituency wishes but in favor of Manning. We were told that it was Manning who personally rejected Wells for the Mayorship in the past and now he (Wells) is trying to satisfy Manning to the displeasure of the constituency.
Altogether as I mentioned before election 2007 is shaping up and being very entertaining and exciting.
Stay tuned for continued action.
