ANTOHER CHANCE TO MAKE THE POLITICS RIGHT Fellow citizens of Trinidad and Tobago after forty-five (45 )years of Independence and thirty-one (31) years of Republican status we now have another opportunity to make the politics right. In doing so we must make an assessment of whether the standard of living of all the people of Trinidad and Tobago has improved over the period of Independence & Republicanism. This analysis can be done by looking at the following:- Health Care Education System Public Utilities Judiciary National Security Public Transport State of our Roads Food availability and Prices Unemployment
In looking at the foregoing, we can hardly boast of the gains or improvements achieved over the years, when the average citizen does not have an equal opportunity to access the various facilities and amenities.
We still have an Inefficient Police Service, Intolerable road conditions, Inefficient Public Transport, Exorbitant food prices, Floods every time rain falls, Poor and Unreliable Health Services, Inadequate water supply, Inefficient Education System, Inefficient Justice System and Lack of sustainable employment.
Despite all of these issues and problems affecting us as citizens, we still allow the politicians to hoodwink us. Some of these politicians belong to parties who had their share of Governance over the years. Suddenly they remember that there are citizens out there who need help. We on the other hand simply allow the various parties / politicians to use this important period in our lives, which we are entitled to once every five (5) years, to encourage us to support them. Then once in power, we are virtually ignored and have no say in what is done on our behalf for the next five (5) years.
This time around we must not deny ourselves the opportunity to put things right and in our own interest. We have to decide who should be given the opportunity to govern our affairs over the next five (5) years. In so doing we must remember that under the present system of Government and the Constitution of Trinidad and Tobago nobody will be listening to us for the next five (5) years. We must however, be conscious of the fact that a Society cannot create what is right if it refuses to correct what is wrong.
We need Good Governance in Trinidad and Tobago and this must be balanced with Good Politics. Past Governments have struggled or maybe not even attempted to get this balance right. Over the past twenty (20) odd years, we had three different administrations in power and neither of them was able to achieve this balance between governance and politics. This time around we must forget the old politics of voting for party line and vote for the candidate who can best represent his / her constituency.
Candidates must be honest and be able to earn the trust of the citizens and reveal their true values and vision, without resorting to empty rhetoric, mud slinging, character assassinations, picong, futile criticisms and polarizing tactics-based ethnicity. We must be concerned about how the issues affecting us would be addressed and not about Race. There should be no African or Indian Race issues in the politics of Trinidad and Tobago. We should be fed up of people voting PNM and calling themselves Africans and some voting UNC and calling themselves Indians.
We should ignore those who say black people have to vote PNM because we can’t give the Treasury to the Indians. That is racist! The Treasury belongs to us the people of Trinidad and Tobago, not Africans or Indians. Politicians need to address the issues of inflation, crime, proper representation, inappropriate political appointments, indiscipline amongst our youths, poor and inefficient Public Services, and all the other ills affecting us as citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. Once again a new dawn is before us! Once again the political life of our beloved nation is being written!
This is a time for us to cast aside cynicism and frustration, disinterest and disenchantment. Let us participate in the process of determining who our Leaders should be and the policies and values that will guide our nation for the next five (5) years. Let us assess the campaigns, as well as the media coverage and take an informed stance on the candidates and the issues addressed.
We have a chance to assess the performance of the PNM and the UNC, who governed us before. We also have the opportunity to assess the vision and promise of new politics and governance being advocated by the Congress of the People (COP). We must then use our vote wisely and disregard those who have disappointed, ignored and failed us over the years by serving their party and class interest. This election is about Leadership, Vision, Morality and Character. We have a limited choice based on our present political scenario. We need however; to forget party politics and vote for those candidates we feel would operate in the best interest of all the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
Therefore, when we go into the Polling Station on Monday 5th November 2007, we should remind ourselves that this may be our last chance to get the politics right. LET US VOTE WISELY! Our Future Is Now In Our Own Hands!
